The Iridium project was born in 1987, the name Iridium derives from the Iridium atom which has 77 electrons
which rotate around the nucleus, in fact this constellation of satellites initially had to
have 77 satellites; later, to reduce costs, the designers reduced the number of satellites to
66, but leaving the name unchanged.
The Iridium satellite network is the first and still today the only truly wireless communication system
global: there are no areas not reached by the satellite signal.
