The Iridium project was born in 1987, the name derives from the atom Iridium Iridium has 77 electrons
that revolve around the nucleus, in fact this constellation of satellites at first had to
to have 77 satellites; later to decrease costs the designers have reduced the number of satellites in
66, while leaving unchanged the name.
The Iridium satellite network is the first and still only real communication system
global: there are no areas not reached by the satellite signal.
Its network has high technical quality, direct switching realized by satellites offers
good voice quality, comparable to terrestrial mobile communications. The communication costs and
management, generally, of the service are very low and remain among the most competitive on the market
satellite telecommunications. Often, the use of an Iridium phone is more economical
compared to the GSM communications made in international roaming.
